Domus de Janas

ound in Sardinia, Domus de Janas are prehistoric underground burial caves that constitute stone necropolises of up to 40 tombs. There are a total of about 2500 of them scattered over the entire Sardinian territory, on average one every 10 square kilometres. The name, which means “fairy houses” in Sardinian, refers to a legend according to which small creatures halfway between the human and divine worlds acted as their guardians. There are numerous engravings carved on their walls, often depicting bulls (deity symbol of male strength), the lunar crescent (symbol of female fertility), the spiral (symbol of the cycle of life), the false door (symbol of the entrance to the afterlife), and inverted anthropomorphic figures (directed towards the afterlife). Numerous statuettes representing the Mother Goddess have also been found inside these caves. In 95 per cent of cases, their opening is facing Sunset or Dawn.
